Minerals plays an important role in our body nutrition. Maintaining proper mineral levels actually depends on our daily food intake. Human beings need small proportions of about 14 minerals to maintain normal functions of the body . These 14 minerals are essential and important for the growth and production of bones, teeth, nerves, skin, hair, blood,vitamins, enzymes and hormones. Some other crucial body processes like nerve transmission, fluid regulation, blood circulation,cellular integrity, energy production and muscle contraction are also dependant on the minerals in the body. There two mineral functions, building blocks of the body and regulating several body processes.
There are two types of minerals: Macro minerals and Macro Minerals Macro minerals : these are required by the body in high quantities . Macro minerals comprises of calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, sodium, chlorine and magnesium and makes about 3.5 % of our body's composition. Micro minerals: these are also called trace elements and are micro nutrients. These are required by the body in small proportions. The micro minerals account for about 0.5 of 1 percent, these consist of iron, manganese, molybdenum, cobalt, fluorine,copper, iodine, zinc, chromium and bromine.
